Chair Yoga for Aches, Sleep and Mood: What the Studies Show

Not everyone can get down on a mat, and that's fine. Chair yoga brings the same ideas to a seat: gentle movement, breathing and balance. Here's what the research says it can do for older adults.

Not everyone can get down on a mat, and that's fine. Chair yoga brings the same ideas to a seat: gentle movement, breathing and balance. Here's what the research says it can do for older adults.

Back pain

Yoga eases back pain. The American College of Physicians recommends yoga as a first treatment for chronic low back pain (2017). And in a large study, yoga helped back pain as much as physical therapy did (Annals of Internal Medicine, 2017).

Aches and stiff joints

In an NIH-funded study, 131 older adults with hip or knee arthritis did chair yoga twice a week for 8 weeks. Compared with a health-education group, they had less pain, and pain got in the way of daily life less. That second benefit lasted about three months after the classes ended (Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, 2017).

A 2025 trial in JAMA Network Open found yoga worked about as well as strengthening exercise for knee arthritis pain. People were also more likely to keep up the practice at home.

Tai chi did well too. In a 2016 study it helped knee arthritis pain and function as much as physical therapy did, and the benefits held for a year.

Better sleep

Trouble sleeping is common with age. A 2024 analysis of 28 studies with 3,460 middle-aged and older adults found yoga was one of the best types of exercise for sleep efficiency and sleep duration, and for feeling less tired during the day. In a separate trial of older adults with insomnia, tai chi improved sleep too.

Mood

A review of studies on older adults found yoga improved balance, flexibility, strength, mood and sleep compared with doing nothing (International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, 2019). Across all ages, yoga reduced symptoms of depression in 14 of 23 studies.

Showing up together

Group classes give people something to look forward to and faces they recognize. Live online classes can do that from home too, and some people find them less intimidating than a studio full of strangers.

Getting started

A few simple tips make it easy to begin:

  • Learn from a qualified teacher who works with older adults.
  • Skip extreme poses and hot yoga.
  • Start in the chair and build up.
  • Check with the doctor first.
