Assisted living fall-prevention ROI calculator
Falls you prevent, agency hours you stop buying, and liability you reduce — modeled from published industry figures. Drag the sliders to fit your community.
Your community
Defaults reflect published senior-living and CDC figures. Adjust to your building; we'll model it precisely on a call. Sources are listed on the Resources page.
This estimate is for illustration using industry-average figures and your inputs; it is not a guarantee of results. Actual savings depend on your residents, staffing, and operations. We'll build a precise, building-specific model with you.
How this is calculated
Two savings lines are modelled. Avoided fall costs are your bed count multiplied by falls per bed per year, multiplied by the average cost of a fall, multiplied by the share of serious falls you expect to avoid. Reduced agency staffing is the premium hours you stop buying each week, multiplied by fifty‑two, multiplied by the premium rate. Nothing else is counted.
Where each default comes from
- Average cost per fall — $17,000
- The U.S. CDC puts the average medical cost of a fall among older adults at more than $17,000. Published figure. Source and the rest of the figures.
- Falls per bed per year — 0.7
- A planning assumption in the typical range for assisted living, not a published figure. Fall rates vary enormously with acuity and how diligently a community records them, so this is the input most worth replacing with your own incident data.
- Serious falls avoided — 40%
- A figure you choose, not a result we are claiming. The slider starts at 40% because it is a common planning target for a fall-prevention programme; set it to whatever you think is defensible for your building, including zero. We would rather show you the shape of the model than a number that flatters us.
- Agency hours and premium rate — 40 hrs/week at $45/hr
- Planning assumptions. Agency rates differ sharply by market and by how urgently the shift is filled, so use your own invoices if you have them.
What this model leaves out
Deliberately, several of the largest numbers. Staff turnover runs at 34.5% a year in assisted living and costs roughly $275,000 in lost net operating income per facility. Liability is excluded entirely, and single wrongful‑death verdicts in fall cases have reached eight figures. Occupancy and rate, which a safety reputation protects, are not modelled either. The result above is therefore a floor rather than a forecast.
