Why I built BioAlign Care

This started with my family.

My grandma fell and broke her hip. My parents were so worried about her that they put her in a facility. They thought it would keep her safe, and maybe it did. But she was miserable.

Every time I saw her, she told me she felt like she was in prison. She hated what her life had become. She'd lost her home, her routine, her freedom, everything that made her feel like herself. You could see it eating at her, and I think it really did make her sick. She ended up passing away from stomach cancer, still wishing she could go home.

Then it happened again, with my mom.

My mom got Alzheimer's, and over time she couldn't take care of herself anymore. She forgot how to walk right. She lost her balance. She fell, and then she fell again, and again. My dad did everything he could to keep her at home with him, but one person can't watch someone every minute of every day. After the falls, it finally got to be too much for him, and he had to put her in a memory care facility.

I've thought about those years a lot. I keep asking myself: what if somebody had noticed my mom's walking and balance getting worse before she started falling? What if my dad had known the second she fell? What if my grandma could have stayed in her own home, with her family looking out for her, instead of living out her last years somewhere she hated?

That's why I built BioAlign Care.

It watches for falls, day and night, so the family knows right away. It keeps track of how someone is walking and how steady they are over time, so you can see changes coming. It watches over them at night. And it does it without putting a camera in the bedroom or the bathroom, and without making anyone wear anything.

I built it for my grandma. I built it for my mom. And I built it for my dad, and for every family member out there trying to do the impossible job of keeping someone they love safe at home.

My hope is simple: that BioAlign Care helps your family keep the people you love at home, and close to you, for a lot longer.

About the Founder

Don Kolz has spent his career at the intersection of technology and the human body, a path that led him to build BioAlign.

Don holds dual master's degrees, an M.A. in Experimental Psychology and an M.S. in Computer Science, a combination that shaped his lifelong interest in how people move, think, and adapt. He coded his first neural network in 1996, long before AI was a household word.

He then spent 16 years in enterprise IT, designing and deploying network infrastructure and systems for organizations including Disney, Bank of America, the City of Thousand Oaks, Jafra Cosmetics, Contessa Foods, and Sanwa Bank, among many others. That work taught him what it takes to build technology that has to work every time, for people who depend on it.

Those years at a keyboard also took a physical toll. Repetitive movement injuries led Don to therapeutic yoga, first as a way to heal and then as a calling. He earned his eRYT-500 certification and went on to found GrassROOTS Wellness, a yoga and wellness studio he owns and operates, focused on healthy aging, senior mobility, and injury recovery.

Working every day with older adults and people recovering from injury, Don saw the same gap again and again. The insight that keeps people strong, mobile, and independent was only available during the hour they spent in the studio. So he set out to bring it home. Combining his background in psychology, computer science, and movement therapy, he designed and built the BioAlign family of products through his company, KinovaAI:

  • BioAlign Care: AI-assisted fall detection and movement monitoring for senior living communities
  • BioAlign Care at Home: Support for aging in place, so seniors can stay safe and independent in their own homes
  • BioAlign Care – Healthspan: Personalized insights and exercise guidance to extend the years of healthy, active living
  • BioAlign Pro Injury Prevention: Biomechanics-driven assessment to catch movement problems before they become injuries

Today Don lives in Fresno, California, where he continues to teach, build, and pursue one goal: helping people keep moving well for as long as they live.
