Gentle Balance Practices for Older Adults

Simple, gentle balance practices older adults can do at home, plus how live yoga classes and the Yoga at Home add-on fit in.

Watching for a change in balance is only half the picture. The other half is doing something about it — and the good news is that balance, like most physical abilities, responds to regular, gentle practice.

I've spent years teaching yoga here in Fresno, and balance work with older students is some of the most rewarding teaching I do. Here are a few simple practices, plus a note on where BioAlign Care At Home's Yoga at Home add-on fits in.

Talk to a doctor first

Before starting anything new, especially if there's already been a fall or a recent balance concern, talk to a doctor or physical therapist. They can point out anything specific to watch for and make sure any new activity is appropriate.

A few gentle practices to start with (with something sturdy nearby to hold)

  1. Heel-to-toe standing. Stand with one foot's heel touching the other foot's toes, holding onto a counter or sturdy chair if needed. Hold for a few breaths, then switch sides.
  2. Single-leg stance, supported. Holding onto a counter, lift one foot slightly off the floor for a few seconds, then switch. Build up time gradually.
  3. Seated-to-standing practice. Practicing a slow, controlled sit-to-stand from a sturdy chair, without using the arms if it's comfortable, builds the leg strength that balance depends on.
  4. Gentle weight shifts. Standing with feet hip-width apart, slowly shift weight side to side, feeling the change in each foot.
  5. Slow, mindful walking. A few minutes of slower-than-usual, deliberate walking — paying attention to each step — builds the same awareness that yoga balance work does.

Consistency matters more than intensity here. A few minutes most days beats an occasional long session.

Where live yoga fits in

This is the part of BioAlign Care At Home I'm proudest of: an optional Yoga at Home add-on ($10/month) with 17 live, instructor-led sessions a week, plus a full library of recorded sessions available any time. Classes are built around balance, strength, and gentle mobility — the same work I do in the studio — but from home, at a pace that's right for your parent.

It's optional, and it's not required for any of the monitoring to work. But if you're looking for something more structured than a handful of exercises on a page, it's there.

Watching the trend

While your parent is working on balance — through yoga, physical therapy, or just the exercises above — BioAlign Care At Home's walking and balance tracking keeps a running picture of how things are changing, right from the tablet already in the home. That's useful in both directions: it can show real progress, or flag early if something needs more attention.
