Any one of these on its own may not mean much. The power is in tracking them over time. A single measurement is a snapshot; a trend line tells you whether someone is holding steady or quietly declining.
Why a once-a-year check isn't enough
In most care settings, gait gets assessed during a scheduled clinical visit — a quarterly review, an annual physical. Those assessments are valuable, but they're snapshots taken months apart. Between them, a person's walking can change a great deal, and there's usually no one capturing it.
In a busy facility, noticing that one resident's stride has shortened slightly over three weeks is nearly impossible during a normal shift.
